The Medical Technologists Licensure Examination (MTLE) is the gate between graduation and practice. It is given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) through the Board of Medical Technology, usually twice a year, in March and August. Recent passing rates have been high (80.26% in March 2025 and 77.54% in August 2025), but every batch has examinees who fall short. Preparation, not luck, is what separates them.
Know how the exam is built
Under RA 5527 as amended, the examination covers these subjects and weights:
| Subject | Weight |
|---|---|
| Clinical Chemistry | 20% |
| Microbiology and Parasitology | 20% |
| Hematology | 20% |
| Blood Banking and Serology | 20% |
| Clinical Microscopy | 10% |
| Histopathologic Techniques, Cytotechnology, MT Laws, Related Laws and Code of Ethics | 10% |
To pass, you need a general average of at least 75%, with no rating below 50% in any major subject, according to Section 19 of the law. Check the PRC’s current examination program and Board resolutions for any updates before your exam.
Build a plan, not a pile of reviewers
- Start with a diagnostic. Take a full practice exam early to find your weak subjects.
- Allocate time by weight and weakness. The four 20% subjects deserve most of your hours, but do not neglect the 10% subjects. Laws and ethics questions are very passable with focused review.
- Use active recall. Practice questions, flashcards and explaining concepts to batchmates beat rereading highlighted notes.
- Space your review. Revisit each subject several times over the months instead of cramming each once.
- Simulate the exam. Do timed, full-length practice tests in exam conditions in the final weeks.
Review center or self-review?
Both work. Review centers give structure, updated question banks and a study group; self-review costs less and gives you flexibility. Whatever you choose, judge it by one question: are you answering more practice questions correctly each week?
The final weeks
- Prepare your requirements early. Apply through the PRC’s online system, secure your documents and book your schedule well before the deadline.
- Visit your testing venue beforehand if you can.
- Sleep. Memory consolidation needs it. All-nighters before the exam hurt more than they help.
- Bring what is required, and know what is prohibited inside the room.
The MTLE does not test whether you studied everything. It tests whether you understood the core well enough to apply it.
After the exam
Results are typically released within a week. The PRC released March 2025 results in four working days. If you pass, oath-taking and registration follow. If you do not, analyze your subject ratings, adjust your plan and try again. Many excellent MedTechs did not pass on their first attempt.
