Medical technologists are trained to stay in the background. We label, centrifuge, run, verify and release, and the result travels on without us. Patients thank the doctor and the nurse. That is how the system is designed, and most of us accept it. But it means the people behind the results rarely get to tell their own stories.
Beyond the White Coat is PINOYMT’s space for those stories.
Why stories matter
Numbers describe the profession: about 9,800 new RMTs passing the board exams in 2025, a law written in 1969, salaries that push many abroad. But numbers do not explain what it feels like to run a provincial hospital laboratory with two people during a dengue outbreak, to crossmatch blood for a child at 3 a.m., or to celebrate a birthday over a video call from the other side of the world.
Stories do. They help new graduates see the paths ahead of them, help families understand the work their loved ones do, and help policymakers see the people affected by decisions about staffing, pay and regulation.
The stories we are looking for
- Life at the bench: the busiest night, the result that changed a patient’s care, the mistake that taught you the most.
- Working abroad: the first day in a new lab, homesickness, the kababayan who helped, the decision to stay or come home.
- Provincial and public health laboratories: doing a lot with very little.
- Career changes: from the bench to industry, teaching, medicine, research or management.
- Students and interns: why you chose this course, and what surprised you.
- The people at home: families, sacrifices and what success really means.
How we tell them
We publish first-person essays and interviews with real people, using their real names or, when they prefer, only their first name and role. We never publish patient information, and we respect employers’ confidentiality. Every story is edited with the writer, never without them.
Every result has a person behind it. Every person has a story worth hearing.
Share yours
If you are a Filipino Medical Technologist, student or educator, at home or abroad, we would love to hear from you. Send a short pitch, a few sentences about the story you want to tell, through our Write for Us page. You do not need to be a professional writer. Our editors will help.
A community, not just a publication
The Filipino MedTech community is spread across hundreds of hospitals and dozens of countries, connected by group chats, alumni pages and professional organizations such as PAMET, which has grown since 1963 into a national network with chapters across the country. PINOYMT hopes to add one more connection: a place where our stories are told by us.
