Mabuhay, kaibigan! I’m thrilled to share my journey of becoming a US citizen. This path was filled with challenges, growth, and unforgettable experiences that have shaped me into who I am today. From leaving the Philippines to finding a new home in the United States, each step brought its own lessons and triumphs. Here’s a detailed look at my story, from the beginning of my journey to the day I proudly took the Oath of Allegiance.
Leaving the Philippines
On December 31, 2013, I arrived in the United States, full of hope and excitement for a new beginning. I came from the Philippines after spending nine years working in Saudi Arabia. My time in Saudi Arabia had been rewarding, but I yearned for new opportunities and the chance to build a better future.
A small hospital in Sidney, Nebraska, petitioned for my working visa, giving me the opportunity to continue my career as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the US. The excitement of starting a new chapter was mixed with anxiety as I prepared to leave my family and familiar surroundings.
Adjusting to Life in Nebraska
Settling into life in Sidney, Nebraska, was more challenging than I had anticipated. The culture shock, homesickness, and the pressure to perform at my new job weighed heavily on me. Working in a small hospital meant adapting to a different pace and environment, which was a significant adjustment from my previous job in Saudi Arabia.
Despite my best efforts, my performance did not meet the hospital’s expectations. The stress of adjusting to a new country, coupled with the longing for home, affected my work. After five months, I was let go from my position. This was a devastating blow. I felt lost, uncertain about my future, and worried about the possibility of deportation if I couldn’t find a new job to sponsor my visa.
A Lifeline in Florida

In my darkest hour, a lifeline came from my friend Jeff Madiam, who lived in Florida. Jeff and his family welcomed me into their home, offering me a place to stay while I searched for a new employer. Their support was a beacon of hope during a time when I felt most alone.
During my month-long stay with Jeff, I leaned heavily on the support of friends and family back in the Philippines. Their encouragement and love helped me cope with the depression and anxiety that had taken hold of me after losing my job. It was a period of reflection and soul-searching, and their unwavering belief in me gave me the strength to keep going.
A New Beginning in Arizona
Just when I thought my options were running out, a friend named Cypher Escobar, who was working in Arizona, reached out to me. Cypher told me that his hospital was hiring Medical Laboratory Scientists and encouraged me to apply. With renewed hope, I sent in my application and was overjoyed when I received an offer.
In June 2014, I flew to Arizona to start my new job, beginning work in July. Moving to Arizona marked a new chapter in my journey. The team at the hospital was welcoming and supportive, making it easier for me to adjust to my new environment. The warmth and camaraderie of my colleagues helped me regain my confidence and perform to the best of my abilities.
The Road to Residency
Working in Arizona turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Not only did I find a supportive work environment, but the hospital also agreed to sponsor my residency application. This was a significant milestone in my journey, bringing me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a US citizen.

In 2018, after years of hard work and perseverance, I received my Green Card. Holding that card in my hands was a moment of immense pride and relief. It symbolized stability and the opportunity to build a future in the United States. With my residency secured, I set my sights on the ultimate goal: naturalization.
Reunited with Family
A pivotal moment in my journey came in 2016 when my family joined me in the United States. Having my wife and children by my side made a world of difference. My wife found a job as a 5th grade science teacher at a middle school, and seeing her thrive in her new role brought immense joy and stability to our lives. We supported each other through the ups and downs, and having them with me made every challenge more manageable.
The Waiting Game
The next five years were a period of waiting, preparation, and personal growth. During this time, I immersed myself in learning about US history, government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. I participated in community activities, and built a network of friends who became like family.
These years also gave me time to reflect on my journey and the incredible support I received from friends and family. Their encouragement and faith in me were the driving forces that kept me going, even when the path seemed difficult. I embraced the challenges and celebrated the small victories along the way.
Achieving Citizenship
Finally, the long-awaited day arrived. On July 12, 2024, I stood alongside other soon-to-be citizens, ready to take the Oath of Allegiance. The ceremony was filled with emotions – pride, joy, and a sense of accomplishment. As I recited the Oath, I felt a deep connection to my new homeland and a profound gratitude for the journey that brought me here.
Becoming a US citizen was not just about obtaining a legal status; it was about embracing a new identity and committing to the values and responsibilities that come with it. It was a moment of immense pride and fulfillment, marking the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new chapter.
Sharing this special day with my wife, who also received her citizenship, made it even more meaningful. Together, we celebrated not just our individual achievements but also our journey as a family. It was a testament to our resilience, hard work, and the unwavering support we provided each other.
Reflecting on the Journey
Looking back on my journey, I am reminded of Psalms 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” My experiences in Sidney, Florida, and Arizona were all part of a greater plan, leading me to greener pastures and still waters.
The setbacks and challenges I faced were stepping stones to my growth and resilience. Each experience taught me valuable lessons and reinforced the importance of perseverance, faith, and the support of loved ones.
Conclusion
Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey. It’s a story of resilience, faith, and the power of community. To all my fellow Filipinos and OFWs, never give up on your dreams. With hard work, determination, and the support of loved ones, anything is possible. My journey to becoming a US citizen has been a testament to the power of hope and perseverance. Mabuhay tayong lahat!
