Is the CLS Career Dead? Why I’m Betting on “MedTech Plus”

I see the posts on Reddit every day. “Is Clinical Laboratory Science worth it?” “Will automation take my job?” “I’m tired of being invisible in the basement.”

I’ve been in this field for a long time. I’ve seen the changes. And I’m here to tell you: The old way of doing CLS is dying. But the new way is just getting started.

The Era of the “MedTech Plus”

For years, we were defined by our ability to pipette and read slides. But today, the most valuable person in the lab isn’t just the one who can run the analyzer—it’s the one who understands the data.

I call this the “MedTech Plus”:

  • Plus Tech: Someone who can troubleshoot the LIS (Lab Information System) or build a simple app to track quality control (like I’m doing with my hospital tools).
  • Plus Business: Someone who understands that a lab is a business.
  • Plus Side-Hustle: Someone who uses their stable 3-day/12-hour schedule to build something else (like trading, photography, or a clothing brand).

Why I’m Still Here

I’m 50 years old. I could have left the field. But I stayed because the schedule gives me freedom.

The 3×12 shift structure is the ultimate cheat code for entrepreneurs. It gives me 4 days a week to:

  1. Code web applications.
  2. Manage my trading portfolio.
  3. Build my “Soft Struggles” brand.
  4. Run PinoyMT.

Don’t Just Be a Button Pusher

If you are a student (like my son) or a new grad (like my daugher), don’t just learn the science. Learn the systems. Learn how to leverage your time off.

The lab isn’t a trap. It’s a launchpad.
